A full year since Marc’s been gone, but this evening I started getting that stupid laughter you get when you’re so tired from stress you wanna scream. Having to be so strong & vigilant for couple weeks during Marc’s anniversary took it’s toll, especially as I have ADD. When you’re overly stimulated then people or things start appearing so idiotic on TV or wherever. I had the TV on this evening after short news show, but I broke out in hysterical laughter listening to this female singer. A foreign auto maker showcased her band in a long ‘commercial’.
The point I want to make is that our culture so often glorifies bands, even when they outright make no sense! Some segments of society automatically revere a musician or singer & imagine them having magic (selling) power! There are actually millions of people who can sing or play an instrument well, musical talent isn’t so rare, but many times the wrong group is put on a pedestal.
Anyway, when interviewed, the female lead singer was very ‘serious’ about her craft but she sang the most meaningless lyrics! At the end of one chorus are the words, ‘ ….. ‘We’re just human animals .. yeah – yeah!’ I just about spit my dinner out, and was cracking up to Marc, ‘Marc, you gotta look at this, it’s too much!’ I tried to be nice and listen if I was wrong about her lyrics, but I just got sicker by the second.
Nothing can top inane-ness like … ‘We’re just human animals …. yeah, ah!’ But I’ll just make up a couple stupid lyrics, (cause I’m in such a hyped up mood):
‘We drone, I gotta phone …. doncha know … oh, ah, oh!’
I gotta go, you’re gettin’ close …. an’ so it goes …. oh, ah, oh!’
I mean, even on the Voice or Idol, the amateur contestants choose a song that is close to their heart or has a purposeful message, and they’re way more interesting than that singer! I’ve worked all my life to try to bring some sense into all I do. I know people who’re trying with all their hearts to make sense of their lives too …. and we don’t go around thinking stuff like that girl sang! I write for a purpose … I don’t want to ‘lose’ my mind …. but ‘find it, maintain soundness’!
Jesus said if we drink of him we’ll find what we’re looking for. Paul told us to ‘set aside worldly traditions, to not seek our own profit, but the profit of many …’ We need to sing or write about what is important to us, what lasts, even what hurts sometimes, and not be so wrapped up in our self-centered little blurbs that negate sound family or religious history. We shouldn’t bow to money or shock value if it tempts us to demean ourselves!
I was shopping in Macy’s the other day and a song played over and over. I generally ‘hear’ a tune first, but these jumped out at me. The chorus repeatedly said, ‘You can be cool like me, you can be cool like me.’ Dear Lord, we don’t need to be ‘cool’ and afraid to be a normal person who struggles with real issues! Coolness robs us of the thing we need, to be authentic and a true friend. Coolness tells us to be like others or be nothing! What a death sentence for our youth … I’m so glad Marc escaped that trap for the most part! Even my son Paul has escaped that alot. How wonderful it is to have sons you can laugh with, be real with …. and respect!
I used to hear my sons play alot of Heavy Metal and I got a feeling for the real people or scamming artists. Come to think of it, I’d rather listen to Black Sabbath, etc over that girl. I’d rather listen to something that makes me ‘feel’ happy or disgusted, rather than listen to something that makes me feel numb or like life had no meaning. Art is supposed to mean something …. it should cost the singer, writer something to dare to be themselves! It’s not art to be a clone! That’s being robotic, propaganda –
