Civil strife comes and goes!
Just like Russian aggression this year in Ukraine, Rome was occupying Israel and persecuting it’s inhabitants 2000 years ago. In that world of turmoil a fragile infant was born, one who was called the Son of God, basically before His birth.

Jesus wasn’t the type of spiritual leader who wanted us to go into the military for Him, like Putin might, to prove his imperial lust for power. He wasn’t a leader who demanded taxes from anyone. He wasn’t a guru, like Gandhi or others. His kingdom was spiritual, he stayed focused on fulfilling the tenants of Jewish scripture and prophecy.
Roman leaders, like some in today’s political fields, thot of themselves as gods sometimes. Certainly we can understand this phenomenon when we look at various people in entertainment, sports, business or social media who promise or proclaim things so persuasively that we think they’re almost super human. Many times we end up in contempt of them because they seem to only want to be worshiped. Their ideas or language is bereft of love, or sacrifice for anything.
The best thing to come out of the Roman captivity of Israel is that people found out they are not a cog in the wheel of an impersonal chain of historical events. Christ told us He loved us and our lives have meaning. He showed us how to live under oppression and actually thrive.
In this day of financial, family and personal challenges, I pray we can lift our eyes up to the God who’s really got our backs –
